LWVS and Civil Liberties

By Rick Bettis

The Board of the LWVS recently endorsed the City of Sacramento "Resolution Affirming Civil Liberties and Opposing the Infringement of Such Liberties by the Federal Government". The LWVS along with a broad –based diverse of more than 30 organizations supported this resolution at hearing before the City Council where is was passed by an 8 tom 1 vote. The coalition supporting this action included such groups as the NAACP, ACLU, Physicians for Social Responsibility, American Library Association, various Asian, Hispanic, Jewish, Islamic organizations and other religious and human rights groups.

The LWVS action was based on position taken by the LWVUS and LWVCA. At it's Convention in May the State League passed a "Resolution on Presidential Civil Liberties and pen government that strongly expresses concerns regarding the provisions of the passed USA Patriots Act and the Homeland Security Act. The League and others has determined that these Acts result in the potential infringement on Constitutional rights including privacy; freedom of speech, assembly and religion: unreasonable search and seizure; the right to counsel and due process; and equal protection under the law. The LWVUS President Kay Maxwell has written the congress and Administration expressing the leagues concerns. The LWVUS web-site contain extensive information and a convenient "click on" message that members can send to your Congressional representatives.
