2000 Positions Feedback
Water Supply
Transportation
Land Use
At the March and April, 2000 Unit Meetings LWVS member discussed the
historical background and current water supply, transportation and land
use issues and alternatives.
Unit members provided comments by evaluating and ranking policy alternatives
presented in the Every Member Tools provided for each meeting. The results
demonstrated a clear consensus that was generally in close agreement
with current LWVS Policies on Land Use, Transportation, and Water. The
feedback was also consistent with the findings and opinions expressed
by League members during the study and discussions of the 1999-2000
issue of emphasis "Sustainable Communities".
Member clearly endorsed water conservation, and controlled or "Smart
Growth" land use policies, such as compact infill development, as
the preferred future water supply polices. Next in order of preference
were innovative and advanced technological solutions such as such as water
recycling and desalination. Member generally rejected major water projects
and increased diversions from our river A mixed response was received
when member where asked if they would willing to pay significantly higher
costs for water supply.
Unit members again expressed unanimous support for "Smart Growth"
polices along with Regional Planning when evaluating transportation
and land use. Alternative transportation modes including public transit,
car and van pools, bicycling, and walking also received uncontested
support. General support was also expressed for limited growth by means
such as limited infrastructure and building permits. However, some members
observed that these policies may not be politically viable at this time.
No support was expressed for "market based" growth policies
or a complete road and highway based personnel "mobility freedom"
approach to our transportation needs.
