With President Jimmy Carter's proclamation in February 1988, the U.S. began to observe Women’s History Week inclusive of International Women’s Day (March 8).
Since 1988, every U.S. President has issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring March to be Women's History Month.
The National Women's History Alliance designates a yearly theme for Women's History Month. The 2024 theme is celebrating “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.”
